The transactions completed by Google recently (just this month) reveal the company’s new strategy for the AI era. The $32 billion cybersecurity firm Wiz and the $4.75 billion renewable energy developer Intersect Power will help build trust and energy resistance for Google services. That’s especially important in times of recent Google services outage (i.e., Gmail in Jan ‘26).
Wiz
The larger of the two deals is Google’s acquisition of Wiz. It is the largest acquisition in Google’s history. Yet quite interesting few facts: the target was founded in 2020, it’s helping to detect and prevent AI ransomware software attacks, and it’s Israeli, and that’s all you need to know about it. Do I, as a Google user, feel that the current cloud tech is not perfect, and could be flawed - yes. But if they add this extra layer for the future general public's free use, I’m definitely for this acquisition.
Intersect Power
Google’s acquisition of Intersect Power targets the electricity supply.
AI models require enormous computing power - we all know (i.e., Blackstone). As for Google, a hyperscale cloud data provider, energy is a huge part of its costs. The target specializes in building projects that pair renewable generation with hyperscalers, which originally purchased their power through long-term contracts with utilities. By acquiring a renewable energy developer outright, Google gains the moves into building the power supply for its data centers. Also known as a vertical integration (reverse) amid the huge demand for datacenters.
General idea
Both deals seem to have a strategic value for Google. It’s not about growth (in my opinion) but more about sustaining the company’s position amid aggressive competition from Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI and Amazon’s hegemony in cloud infrastructure. Pretty expensive move to keep one’s foot in the game.
